Critical Condition - 1987 ***

Richard Pryor movies are always over the top and very silly. Especially the ones where he's paired up with Gene Wilder. He may be 'acting solo' here, but he's still pretty funny. Here he plays Kevin, a con man who is threatened with jail after being caught smuggling jewellery. Desperate to avoid a prison sentence, he pretends that he is insane (the courtroom scene in which he does this is totally improvised, and hilarious) and as a result is carted off to a mental hospital. When he arrives at the hospital a power surge renders the whole place in darkness and without medical equipment and he has to pose as a qualified doctor in order to escape. Escaping isn't so easy however when patients begin to need urgent treatment and he has to jump in and help them, despite not having a clue what he is doing. It's almost slapstick in some ways, but definitely has Pryor's manic, psychotic slant on it.
Funny.

Predator - 1987 ****

Okay, yes, I admit it, I'm now a Predator convert. I have spent the last decade or so putting myself off watching this, and it was only when my boyfriend put it on and practically chained me to the bed to watch it did I realise that it was actually pretty good. Granted, Schwarzenegger is a hilarious actor (unintentionally of course) but the story is really gripping, and when we had also seen a behind the scenes look at how the 'Predator' costume was designed it made it a lot more interesting to me. This movie is quite ahead of it's time when you look at how some of the scenes are filmed (including the heat detector).
Now I have seen it, I realise how exciting it is that two worldwide blockbusters decided to come together and incorporate their stories (Alien vs. Predator). I can't wait to see it.

(HORROR) Slumber Party Massacre 2 - 1987 ***

Yes, the film really is as cheesy as the poster above makes out. It starts off well, but soon collapses into a mess.
A weekend away at a friend's condo soon goes downhill for Courtney as she begins to dream about her sister who is locked away in a mental institution warning her of a killer on the loose who is after her. It's a bit of a jumble and not particularly well directed.

Broadcast News - 1987 ***

Not a bad film actually, and Holly Hunter was excellent as producer to William Hurt and the love interest to Albert Brooks. This reminded me a bit of the other movie based on TV that I saw a while ago that I didn't think much of....

It's always interesting to see how much things have changed when watching a film that involves 'up to date' tv equipment. It looked totally out of place and totally unfashionable. HA! 'Network' is the name of the film I was trying to remember which to be honest was pretty dire in comparison to this.

Yet again another film that I put off watching when in fact it was well worth the wait. I need to start changing my assumptions on films.
