Soapdish - 1991 **

For a film that had such a good cast it was surprisingly unfunny and over the top. Sally Field is the manic, obsessive star of a daytime television soap who becomes desperate after finding out that the company want to get rid of her. Robert Downey Jnr plays one of the writers, besotted with a member of the cast, and Whoopi Goldberg is Field's close friend and scriptwriter Rose.
There is obviously a reason why this isn't exactly an Oscar winner.

What about Bob? - 1991 ****

'What about Bob' starts off as a rather strange, whimsical film and quickly escalates into almost screwball proportions. Bill Murray plays neurotic Bob, who decides to follow his new shrink (played brilliantly by Richard Dreyfuss) to his holiday home in Maine. Try as Dreyfuss might, he just can't get rid of Bob, even to the extent where his family start including him in everyday plans. Bob meanwhile is spreading his own sort of love around the island, with surprising results.
Worth a watch, I've wanted to see this for ages.

House Party - 1991 ** 1/2

The first 'House Party' was pretty dire, so what possessed me to watch the second one? I have no idea. Contrary to reviews I preferred this one. It was funnier despite the fact it went way off track regarding the original story. Still, there are funnier films out there, and even though Whoopi Goldberg appeared briefly at the beginning it didn't raise the tone of the film much more.

Don't Tell Mum the Babysitter's Dead - 1991 **

The scariest thing about this film is Christina Applegate's massive eyebrows which take over most of her scenes with abject force.
The movie itself is a bit stupid. It's I suppose trying to follow along the same sort of lines as 'Weekend at Bernie's' and while that was hilarious from start to finish, this one fails miserably and doesn't deliver any sort of humour to it's audience. A mother leaves her five children at home alone for 2 months while she goes on vacation, and during that time (well, to be honest, about 2 days after she's gone) the babysitter dies. Keen to have the place to themselves and not worry their mother, the siblings make a pact not to tell her what has happened and instead try to run the house themselves for the remainder of the time, making more and more mess and mistakes as they go along. It's not funny.

Hot Shots - 1991 ***

Quite a funny spoof of 'Top Gun' and I always find Charlie Sheen amusing so this was a good way to pass some time. Maybe a bit dated now, but still worth a watch, and the slightly unhinged captain who keeps knocking in to things and using his finger as a telescope made me chuckle. Interesting as well to see Sheen and Cryer in a film together before going on to be in 'Two and a Half Men.' The beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Deceived - 1991 **

A very poor offering from Goldie Hawn. This was a mediocre thriller with a mixture of paranoid tension and then boring sub-text. Hawn meets the man of her dreams (or so she thinks) and they get married. She then learns that he has perished in a car accident and is devastated. However, before long she is learning dreadful things about her seemingly perfect husband. Rather boring, the characters are all disfunctional and I really found the film dragged.
