(HORROR) Fear Lives Here - 2012 **

Fear Lives Here (2012) Poster

What more excitement could one viewer have that watching a whole film about a group of idiots who get stranded in a remote area whilst hiking and end up spending most of the evening in their car. Oh, and they do encounter a strange ghostly boy who appears and disappears every now and again. It's awfully predictable and turns into something even worse. The characters in these films are always so thick that it doesn't surprise me that they die in such stupid/hilarious ways. This is no exception.

(HORROR) The Perfect House - 2013 *

Absolutely appalling movie that tries so hard to be exciting and new, but just ends up being as bad as all the other horrors out there.
A young couple (the woman is wearing white stilettos..) go to view what they think is going to be their dream house and are met by a disturbingly slutty looking estate agent with her cleavage out who rolls around on the bed and whips her hair back and forth. (Just a tad odd). This seems to convince the man however that he wants the house immediately, regardless of the fact he hasn't really seen any of the house itself. As she explains to them about the basement, we are shown a flashback of three horrendous stories, each involving crazy lunatics who massacred people down there. They really are very bad, and the first flashback is hilariously shown in black and white (because apparently the 1970s, 80s or 90s didn't have colour). The acting is beyond appalling, and my friend and I actually joked at the beginning that it was the sort of script you would get in a porn film, before realising that it was disturbingly similar to one.
This was just dire.

The Birdcage - 1996 *****

The Birdcage is screamingly funny, and to be honest the laughs from Robin Williams and his super camp partner (Nathan Lane) are regular and bounteous.
Armand (Williams) enjoys his life as the owner of a popular drag club called 'The Birdcage' where his partner Albert performs as 'Starina' on a regular basis.
Apart from their occasional hissy fits, the two live happily together. That is, until Armand's son Val announces that he is getting married. His future father-in-law is a Republican Senator and has very old-fashioned and narrow-minded views about homosexuality. With this in mind, Val suggests that Albert 'disappears' for a few days so that the impression can be given of a 'normal' family when the bride-to-be's parents come to visit. Agreeing to this, Armand decides to track down his ex wife to play the role convincingly, not counting on Albert upstaging the whole evening.
Very funny, enjoyable, easy going and entirely good-natured. Must be watched.

A Day at the Races - 1937 ****

Ridiculously funny offering from the Marx Brothers. Groucho takes over a sanitarium under the pretence of being a doctor when in fact he is simply a vet.
Enter some hilarious scenes that actually made me scream with laughter and Chico and Harpo sprinkle their own special magic on every second of their screen time.

Despicable Me - 2010 ****

'I'm having a bad bad day, it's about time that I had my way..' this song must have given Pharrell's career a big boost. And the film itself is hilarious as well. The main character is a criminal mastermind who inherits 3 little children to look after from an orphanage as part of his grand scheme and gradually overcomes his one-sided view of the world and himself to be a good father figure. It's light-hearted fun and the four little yellow creatures are adorable. Worth a watch.

Little Man - 2006 ****

I'm never disappointed by anything involving the Wayan brothers, and this was hilarious. I have no idea how they filmed it but it was worth whatever graphics they used because the results were scene after scene of very funny anecdotes, pained looks, and comic timing. Really good watch, a bit rude in some parts but let's face it, what funny films these days aren't, and I really enjoyed it.

Weekend At Bernie's - 1989 *****

Remember that episode of 'Friends' when Rachel is asked what her mates think her favorite film is and she says 'Dangerous Liaisons', and then when they ask he what a real favorite film is she smirks and says 'Weekend at Bernie's' because it's thought of as a naughty pleasure? Well i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think this is one of the funniest films I have seen in AGES and I had a number of seriously uncontrollable laughing fits throughout.
Two guys are invited to Bernie their boss's house in Hampton Island for the weekend. They believe they are going because he is pleased with their work, he in fact wants to kills them because they have unearthed a serious mistake in his financial documents. However he is not aware that a mafia boss is actually out to kill HIM and so starts a chain of hysterically funny events where the 2 guys, after finding him dead, have to pretend that Bernie is alive in every situation possible so as not to arouse suspicion, much to the confusion of the hit man who was sure he had killed him! It's just brilliant, and very original. I'm going to track down the sequel.

Ruthless People - 1986 ****

I must say the cover of the film was what put me off watching it for such a long time. It looked so dated and a bit tacky to be honest. But sooner or later I realised that I have seen the majority of 80s comedies and really needed to watch it to 'tick it off the list.' Well all I can say is I'm so glad I finally watched it. It was hilarious. Bette Midler is on top form and Danny DeVito made me chuckle almos constantly throughout the film.
DeVito plays a filthy rich businessman who has decided he wanted to get rid of his wife so that he can move his mistress in instead. However, luck seems to be changing for him when his wife is kidnapped by his ex-employee and girlfriend who then hold her for ransom. However, the kidnappers are meek, mild people who wouldn't hurt a fly and instead of killing her because DeVito refuses to pay the ransom they instead let her stay with them. Then the tables turn...
Hilarious. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this was one of the best comedies from that decade I have seen!

The Nutty Professor - 1963 ****

This is the first film I have seen with Jerry Lewis and it won't be my last. My colleague and I were having an intense conversation the other day about me getting Jerry Lewis and Jerry Lee Lewis mixed up. I won't be doing that again. This film is about 10 times funnier than the newer Eddie Murphy offering.

Jerry Lewis is hilarious as the crazy, nerdy Professor who invents a potion to help him become more confident in his workplace, the trouble is, the result is a Jekyll and Hyde personality, where the confident side of him becomes obnoxious, slimy and arrogant (but rather attractive!).There are some very funny scenes, inculding one where he comes to class the morning after a night out as his alter ego with a stonking hangover and every single sound he hears is exaggerated

I have another of his films on my list to see (The Ladies Man) and I have added a load more of his films to my Tesco rental. Can't wait!
