In Bruges - 2008

Shoot first, sightsee later

Apparently this is meant to be a funny film. I must have been watching the wrong movie to other reviewers. I saw nothing funny about this movie at all. Colin Farrell is as can be expected an arrogant, swearing lout (not unlike his real persona) who, along with his fellow hitman Brendan Gleeson is sent to Bruges for 2 weeks to keep a low profile after a murder goes horribly wrong. The idea is to relax and check out the sights, although Farrell only has three things on his mind, swearing, swearing and more swearing. How enjoyable for us an audience to listen to him cussing and blinding for the entirety of the film. His mother must be so proud. The film is basically just that, f words and drinking mixed with a little sex and drugs. Added to which, an appearance by Ralph Fiennes (which confused me at first with Jason Statham ) as the mob king with a fondness for Belgium. The only credible thing about the film is the beautiful location where they happen to be. Bruges is a really picturesque and tranquil town and it is lovely to see some of the sights that it is known for. It's a shame that Farrell's character is too much of a moron to appreciate any of it.

Rating (purely because of the location) 3/5
