Memoirs of a Geisha - 2005

She painted her face to hide her face.
What a beautifully sumptuous film. Films like this are a must for people who want to experience a different country through the eyes of a filmmaker who really emphasises the best points. Based on the bestselling book of the same name this story follows a young girl who is taken away from her father with her sister and wishes to become a Geisha at Willow World. After a series of setbacks including her sister running away without her and her rivalry with the most popular Geisha, the little girl, now named Sayuri becomes the most celebrated Geisha in Japan. A emotional rollarcoaster of a film that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Some reviewers complained that the story dropped you in the middle and didn't allow you air to breathe because it was so emotional but I think that is one of the positive things about the film, that we have to suffer along with the little girl and her sister. A delicious movie that delights and upsets in equal amounts.
